Wood burning vs. gas log fireplace?

I have a home that was built in 1976 it has a wood burning fireplace that in the 80’s was made into a gas fireplace. I know that gas is going waay up this year. I have a gas fitter that can remove the old gas logs and then I can have the chimney inspected etc. Do you think this would be a cost effective transformation???
we have tons of people here that will deliver loads of wood for around 50.00. Also this fireplace has a ash door(where you can go outside and scoop the ashes out )

I don’t think you’re going to save any money by burning wood unless you have a lot of dead trees around. Wood also smokes, is full of bugs, and leaves a lot of very fine ash to clean up. As a compromise, we have a gas starter in our fp so we only turn on the gas flame to get the fire going good and then shut it off. This is much easier than trying to ignite wood with a butane lighter or newspaper. The wood sits in a grate over the starter which is just a long low pipe of sorts with several holes along it’s length. We have a pretty much endless supply of wood though. It’s still a mess.
